Arabic & Middle East Studies

Access to Mideast and Islamic resources

This project began as a consequence of a series of conversations in 2010 between Charles Jones and Peter Magierski at NYU about the need for a tool to assemble and distribute information on open access material relating to the Middle East. This blog includes a continuously updated list of open access journals in Middle Eastern studies. The link goes to the list of open access journals, but you can use the blog search to find other types of open access materials, such as books and manuscripts. You can also use the blog label feature to find resources related to specific countries

African studies abstracts

Provides indexing and abstracts to articles in over 200 journals and to the individual essays in books of collected essays related to African Studies. Also covers a limited number of films & documentaries related to Africa. Searching is most effective from the link to "All issues" in the left-hand menu, otherwise you will open a PDF of the print version of the index. Produced by the African Studies Center in Lieden, Holland, the search results screen lists articles in their original language of publication (the majority of which appear to be in English) but the search engine and commands default to Dutch; click on the British flag in the upper right to change these to English. No full text provided, but detailed abstracts are very useful. Some other reports and research studies are listed on the sidebar and may be available in full-text format. As of 5/11, searching is not compatible with Firefox 4.x versions, use IE instead. African Studies Center, University of Leiden, Netherlands

Encyclopedia of women & Islamic cultures

Provides access to a specialist encyclopedia focused on women's studies and Islamic cultures. The title of this work intends a broader scope than it actually specifies. For this work isn't concerned only with women and women's issues in countries where Muslim culture has historically predominated, it is also concerned with issues where Muslim culture has been a significant minority presence within the domains of other majority faiths. It is further concerned with women as adherents and outsiders to Islamic faith in cultures where Islam has been a cultural influence. So this work covers an enormous amount of ground. It is not surprising, therefore, that the print version runs to five volumes with two supplements. Written primarily with the needs of the specialist researcher in mind, the articles may still be profitably mined by researchers with more general purposes in view. Searchable either by specific volumes or through its "Advanced Search" keyword interface, the researcher has the option of searching it like a database, or serendipitously, like a print encyclopedia. This resource should be useful to a wide cross section of researchers: students of women's issues in Islamic cultures, students of Islam as a minority culture, students of minorities in predominantly Islamic cultures...to name just a few. Covers all eras of Islamic civilization from the 7th century to the present. Brill
