17th-18th century Burney Collection newspapers

Search early newspapers, pamphlets, and "newsbooks" from the 1603 Hampton Court Conference of 1603 (published a year later in 1604) through items published in 1804. Materials are digitized and represent the private but extensive collection of the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817). Many of the pamphlets and broadsides Burney collected are the only samples of these specific materials surviving. Collection content is a bit eclectic - largely focusing on materials published in London, but Scotland and Ireland are represented, as are publications from Europe, India, Barbados, Jamaica, and the United States. Keyword searching may be combined with Basic and Advanced search features which provide limits by date, place of publication, title of publication, language, and section of the news publication. Also searchable in Gale's 19th Century British Libraries Newspapers database to get a more comprehensive view of British news industry and news publishing. Gale Cengage

It also indexes a sizable number of academic journals and magazines, with some duplication of IJP (less than 50 %). Lots of good material, difficult to classify. Reasonably advanced search interface, including publication search feature, scholarly journals limiter, publication type and document type limiters. People of the founding era

Enables users to search the various papers and documents contained in the University of Virginia’s Founding Era full-text documents to identify individuals and their connections. Prosopography is the study of groups of people (grouped by gender, occupation, birth year, and other key data points) to study the group itself, not just the individuals. This database enables users to identify connections, patterns, etc. through a keyword search, with limits for gender, birth/death year, occupation, religion, and geographical region to better enable such a prosopographical study. The data is less robust for women, slaves, and Native Americans due to the nature of the historical record, but is still useful for identifying patterns among these groups. References to the primary sources in the Founding Era documents (which Baylor also owns digitally) makes finding the context for the individual very easy. Interactive, visual graphs of connections are provided. Brief biographies are provided for all individuals and the data on each person is presented in the same way so that searches can be more effective. The People of the Founding Era is still a work in progress with information being added regularly

Super enlightenment

Provides access to a digital collection of primarily eighteenth-century French language electronic texts of mythology, alchemy, science, divine arcana, and secret societies. The collection is the product of a working thesis on the part of the project"s coordinators, that rather than constituting a break with Enlightenment ideals, these semi-occultic themed treatises demonstrate a profound continuity with the vision and values of Enlightenment rationalism, despite transgressing the bounds of the sensible (humanly knowable) world. From the perspective of orthodox, main stream philosophical research, this is a small collection of philosophically marginal texts. At best, this is a narrowly focused specialist resource specifically tailored for a select coterie of researchers in mid-eighteenth to late nineteenth-century French intellectual history. Generally not worth consulting by the generalist philosophical researcher

Not included are non-literary texts, such as personal letters, commercial texts, and inscriptions. US history collection (Gale)

Indexes and provides abstracts to articles in about 40 journals (scholarly and popular) in history. History is defined broadly to include journals covering folklore, ecology, religion, and archaeology, among others. Coverage dates are 1980 - present; as an example of how narrow their journal coverage is, the subject "Clinton, Bill" has only 114 results associated with it. This would be a good starting point for contemporary issues, or if the user has a very broad topic and isn't sure how to start. Better yet, the "Browse Subject" feature can help select or narrow down a topic. Once there is a focused topic, other article indexes can be used to get a fuller picture of the topic. Includes full text of many of the articles indexed. Gale Cengage
