17th-18th century Burney Collection newspapers

Search early newspapers, pamphlets, and "newsbooks" from the 1603 Hampton Court Conference of 1603 (published a year later in 1604) through items published in 1804. Materials are digitized and represent the private but extensive collection of the Reverend Charles Burney (1757 - 1817). Many of the pamphlets and broadsides Burney collected are the only samples of these specific materials surviving. Collection content is a bit eclectic - largely focusing on materials published in London, but Scotland and Ireland are represented, as are publications from Europe, India, Barbados, Jamaica, and the United States. Keyword searching may be combined with Basic and Advanced search features which provide limits by date, place of publication, title of publication, language, and section of the news publication. African-American newspapers

Articles include coverage of major issues, biographies of individuals, poetry, prose, and cultural concerns for the African American community. Three of the 8 titles were published in New York (including Frederick Douglass' 3 newspapers and The Colored American and Freedom's Journal), one from western Canada (Provincial Freedom), one from D.C.
