Année philologique

Provides an index to materials in the field of Classical Studies covering especially topics in Greco-Roman history and civilization, archaeology, language and literature. Since June 2009 this database, the electronic version of the print index L'Annee Philologique, has extended its coverage of scholarly publications back to 1924, when the print index was first offered. All years are searchable by the following: modern authors, full text (not full text of the articles but full text of the index!), and ancient authors and texts. For subjects and disciplines there are two options: one for those articles appearing prior to volume 67 and one for those articles appearing after volume 67. Coverage typically lags two years behind publication. Entries for journal articles usually have an abstract and the abstract is usually in the language of the article. By moving the cursor on a journal title abbreviation, the full title of the journal will be displayed. Tip: do not click on the abbreviation; the display of the full title may take a second or two. For books, book reviews are indicated using standard abbreviations for the journal that contains the review. Société internationale de bibliographie classique

Digital Karl Barth library

Provides access to a full-text searchable database of Karl Barth's works in German and English including (as of this writing) "the entire corpus of Barth's Gesamtausgabe", Die kirchliche Dogmatik, the Church Dogmatics, and Other Writings. This is an ongoing project and more volumes can be expected to augment the current online collection over time. The great benefit of this electronic collection is its full text searchability, which facilitates a streamlined, "highly sophisticated" level analysis of the texts of Barth's work, unattainable in the print volumes. The volumes can be searched by tables of contents, by document characteristics, or by keyword through its search engine. Viewing the document files requires some adjusting. Once a particular HTML full-text file has been accessed, succeeding and preceding pages are navigated by means of barely discernable "Previous section" / "Next section" links at the top and bottom left and right margins of the page. This is a tremendous resource for students of Neo-Orthodoxy, Barth, or the history of Reformed thought in the 20th century. Alexander Street Press

Digital library of classic Protestant texts

Provides access to a full-text searchable database of primary source Protestant documents covering the 16th and 17th centuries only. The collection includes the theological writings of more than 300 Protestant authors, as well as a wide range of confessional documents, biblical commentaries, polemical treatises, and Bible translations. Published by Alexander Street Press (publishers of the Digital Karl Barth Library), this resource has the same interface and the same searchability options and benefits as the aforementioned work, together with its clunky page advancing interface. This is a great resource for anyone seeking accessible primary source material on mainline Reformation intellectual and clerical leaders of the period. Coverage is broad and ecumenically representative, with one glaring exception: no Anabaptist/ Mennonite representation whatsoever. If you are seeking primary sources in the Reformed, Lutheran, Anglican, Quaker, Unitarian/Socinian, or Arminian traditions, this is a fruitful resource to search. If you are seeking Anabaptist primary sources, you will need to look elsewhere. Alexander Street Press

Encyclopedia of the Bible and its reception

Comprises an encyclopedia of both the reception history of the Bible in its "different canonic forms in Judaism and Christianity" and of the "current state of knowledge on the origins and development of the Bible." This is a specialist work designed to orient researchers by retrospectively summarizing "major themes and issues" in the field and pointing forward to future trajectories for research. This resource is an ongoing project and additional volumes can be expected for some time to come (volumes 1 and 2 have not exhausted alphabetical entries for the A's). As of this writing (May 2011), progress towards completion is proceeding incrementally (and sadly, behind schedule). When it is completed, this should be a resource of tremendous breadth and depth. It is capable of both keyword and volume content searching. Should be useful to Biblical researchers across a wide range of interests, not just to those interested in the reception history of the Bible. Walter de Gruyter

Encyclopedia of women & Islamic cultures

Provides access to a specialist encyclopedia focused on women's studies and Islamic cultures. The title of this work intends a broader scope than it actually specifies. For this work isn't concerned only with women and women's issues in countries where Muslim culture has historically predominated, it is also concerned with issues where Muslim culture has been a significant minority presence within the domains of other majority faiths. It is further concerned with women as adherents and outsiders to Islamic faith in cultures where Islam has been a cultural influence. So this work covers an enormous amount of ground. It is not surprising, therefore, that the print version runs to five volumes with two supplements. Written primarily with the needs of the specialist researcher in mind, the articles may still be profitably mined by researchers with more general purposes in view. Searchable either by specific volumes or through its "Advanced Search" keyword interface, the researcher has the option of searching it like a database, or serendipitously, like a print encyclopedia. This resource should be useful to a wide cross section of researchers: students of women's issues in Islamic cultures, students of Islam as a minority culture, students of minorities in predominantly Islamic cultures...to name just a few. Covers all eras of Islamic civilization from the 7th century to the present. Brill

ETHXWEb

Comprises an index of " journal articles, book chapters, bills, laws, court decisions, reports, books, audiovisuals, and news relating to bioethics and professional ethics." (Publisher's website). Maintained by the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, this resource has very limited full text accessibility (for non-Georgetown University users). Good source for citations to research literature of bioethics and professional ethics. But in most cases, accessing the text will require consulting other resources. Results processing options are limited; either save all results from search or print all results...no email option is available. The save results option is difficult to use. Despite its quirks, however, researchers requiring comprehensive bibliographies of research literature for work in the areas of professional and bioethics will want to consult this resource. Began in the 1970's under the title BIOETHICSLINE. Some retrospective journal coverage goes back to 1947

Index of Medieval art

Emphasizes primarily western Europe. The "Index" is a record of Christian art in over 17 media types from the early apostolic times to 1550 (some collections include up to the mid 16th century). Recently Christian art from the Coptic and Near Eastern Christian traditions has been included. Each image is assigned a primary subject (the person(s), event, or scene in the image) and other subject fields to identify the other items in the image. Information on the image includes (as applicable): artist, name and location of work, medium, object type, style, school, date, dimensions, and description. Browse pre- defined fields by keywords; simple and advanced search features are also available. The online version contains only about 30% of the images and information available in the card index available at Princeton University. In 1957 the 100,000th image was added to the record and approximately 1,000 images have been added to the collection annually since then. The online database began in 1991 and contains nearly 80,000 works of art. Not all images are available for viewing due to copyright restrictions. Image quality varies greatly and may be black & white or color. Image records include a bibliography of scholarship on the image where it exists. Patrologiae cursus completus. Series Graeca

Provides full-text access to the printed works of Greek Christian writers down to the Council of Florence (1438- 39). This is a collection of the writings of the church leaders who wrote in Greek, including both the Eastern "Fathers" and those Western Christians who wrote before the Latin takeover of the West in the third century. The texts are generally interlaced with one column of Greek and a corresponding column on the other side of the page that is the Latin translation. Where the Greek has been lost, such as in Irenaeus, the full text appears only in Latin, and the extant Greek fragments of the work are interspersed throughout the Latin text. This is a full- text library of resources rather than a full-text database. Using the “Control” and “F” keys will bring up a rudimentary search engine. But searchability extends no farther than author searching of the HTML links. Scrolling down the entry list is only slightly less efficient. Full text is in JPG format, which makes electronic text capture problematic. Not a challenge for the Greek and Latin literate per se, but those requiring translation apps will have to key in the text themselves. Coverage is from the 2nd century CE to 1438-39 CE. Religion & philosophy collection (Gale)

Provides a collection of (mostly) peer-reviewed articles, with some full text in HTML and PDF format covering studies in religion and philosophy, intended primarily for academic researchers. There is considerable overlap between this index and other religious and philosophical indexes currently subscribed. So this one is perhaps best used as a supplemental resource, where comprehensiveness of results is a prime concern. It does contain some unique material, but not in sufficient quantities to justify enormous time expenditure. This collection is part of the larger Academic OneFile database. So ostensibly, this resource can be dispensed with, and the mother database could be searched in preference. Sophisticated search features include: peer review limiter, full text limiter, publication title search, etc. It does not include a scripture search feature. Full text availability. Includes some abstracts. Gale Cengage

Religious and Theological Abstracts

Provides citation and abstract level access to a range of scholarly and non-scholarly journals in religion and theology. Christian content preponderates in indexing coverage, but coverage also includes a number of important Jewish scholarly periodicals and a fair number of scholarly journals covering other world faiths. The strengths of this database are its interdisciplinary coverage and its strong focus on scholarly journals in ministry studies. There is considerable overlap between this resource and other religion indexes in the areas of systematic theology, church history, philosophy, and biblical studies. And it provides no full-text access. So after locating relevant citations, the researcher will have to independently verify local availability in BU Library holdings by performing a journal title search in the catalog. Best used, therefore, as a second tier option for research in systematic, church history, philosophy, or biblical studies, where comprehensiveness of results is not imperative. However, for those researching topics in ministry studies, this is a resource of first resort. Its coverage of academic journals in ministry studies is deep, broad, and frequently unique. The search interface looks clunky but is actually reasonably sophisticated, giving the researcher a range of options including author, title, title/abstract, date range limiter, and journal title search features

US history collection (Gale)

Indexes and provides abstracts to articles in about 40 journals (scholarly and popular) in history. History is defined broadly to include journals covering folklore, ecology, religion, and archaeology, among others. Coverage dates are 1980 - present; as an example of how narrow their journal coverage is, the subject "Clinton, Bill" has only 114 results associated with it. This would be a good starting point for contemporary issues, or if the user has a very broad topic and isn't sure how to start. Better yet, the "Browse Subject" feature can help select or narrow down a topic. Once there is a focused topic, other article indexes can be used to get a fuller picture of the topic. What this resource provides access to therefore are full text quotations of earlier Latin Bibles cited in patristic sources. The user interface is initially challenging. Database features and commands are exclusively in German, with no translation app or alternative English version of the interface.
